Schools will assess pupils with special educational needs in the first instance and categorise according to need. Only some special educational needs are learning difficulties. Sensory and physical needs can be barriers to learning but are not learning difficulties. The categories/areas of need used are

Cognition and Learning

  • Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) 
  • Moderate Learning Difficulty (MLD) 
  • Severe Learning Difficulty (SLD) 
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulty (PMLD) 

Behaviour, Emotional and Social Development

  • Behaviour, Emotional and Social Difficulty (BESD) 

Communication and Interaction

  • Speech, language and Communication Needs (SLCN) 
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) 

Sensory and/or Physical Needs 

  • Visual Impairment (VI) 
  • Hearing Impairment (HI) 
  • Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI) 
  • Physical Disability (PD)          
  • Other (OTH)
